The Simple Pleasures Of Lake Superior

Here she comes! The Hjordis sails the East Bay a couple of times a day in summer.

The Star Tribune named the Hjordis “The Best Way to Sail Lake Superior 2013” and we agree!

Besides meeting a lot of nice visitors who come into Stone Harbor, I enjoy the simple pleasure of sitting in my third floor office and looking out over the vast expanse of Lake Superior. I watch how the changing seasons affect the lake. In the middle of the winter when the weather is around zero, I watch the steam rise off the lake that never freezes. In the spring and summer, I watch the fog roll in and out. In the Fall, the lake seems angry with its high waves as the weather gets colder. I watch families search for agates after a bids storm all times of the year. “Salties”–those ocean going freighters and lakers–go past in the mist, sometimes looking like ghost ships when the weather is right. And one pleasure that never gets old is watching the North House Folk School’s schooner Hjordis sail past my window a couple times a day in the summer. Like I said, it is the simple pleasures of life.
